For PVA, edema isn't a critical element but if it's there, it goes under "other" right?

Definitely... Chart anything peculiar... if not in parenthesis, then in OTHER OBSERVATIONS.
That is why I haven't taken some elements out even though they may not be a part of critical elements anymore.... because to me it does not make sense why they might not be there. Let me pose a scenario for your to consider and this is from my own experience when I was working on a med-surg and ortho units. Patient came in for obstruction and while he was there also developed a DVT. That would be a very significant finding in the PVA if you were the nurse doing the assessment for this patient.. the change in edema that was noticeable gave you a tell tale sign of circulation even though the patient may have been with it or not to report pain.
